John Philip Sousa Middle School

"Where Excellence is the Standard"

The mission of John Philip Sousa Middle School is proficiency for ALL students across subject areas and character development.

Overview

Sousa Middle School is committed to using data-driven instruction in order to meet the needs of all  students and move them academically to proficient and advanced placements.  Sousa is also dedicated to developing strong character in all students in order to set our students up for success in all areas of  life.   In 2009,  Sousa became an Arts Catalyst school;  bringing dance, visual art, drama, and music into the curriculum across all subject areas.  With the addition of the Arts Catalyst Program, students are able to explore artistic areas of interest; and teachers are abe to create dynamic instruction centered around the arts to further reach students.  Sousa Middle School strives to educate the WHOLE child through data-driven instruction, character development and artistic exploration.

Redefining Success

Sousa Middle School has achieved tremendous double-digit academic gains in Reading and Mathematics since the 2008 DC CAS. Because of soaring achievements and positive school culture, Sousa was selected to become part of the student recruitment campaign beginning in the 2009-2010 school year.
Sousa provides an environment focused on teaching and learning with ample opportunities for extracurricular activities and sports. Sousa’s goal is to produce well-rounded students who are ready to excel in high school and beyond.

Taking Care of the Future

Sousa Middle School is a full service school that offers additional academic, social, and emotional support for all students. The school has devoted professionals who are dedicated to maintaining a safe and orderly environment.
Sousa also has a very talented instructional coach who is in classrooms daily, providing literacy support to both teachers and students in developing a structured and rigorous academic program. Additionally, there are two mentors and two social workers available to motivate students and encourage positive behavior.

Going Beyond the School Day

Sousa Middle School recognizes the power and importance of quality out-of-school time experiences for each student. Sousa’s after-school programs support healthy development, school performance, and a smooth transition to high school.
